USC's bid to return to the College World Series for the first time in 16 years ended Sunday with a 12-10 loss to defending national champion Louisiana State in the South Regional at Baton Rouge, La.

Scott Schultz struck out first baseman J.P. Roberge with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to preserve LSU's victory and send the Tigers to the College World Series for the seventh time in nine years.

USC's loss spoiled the performance of Trojan outfielder Jacque Jones, who hit three two-run homers. The Trojans, who had 14 hits, finished 41-20.

"I think if we had been at two different regionals, we both would have been in Omaha," said LSU second baseman Todd Walker, an All-American who hit two home runs Sunday and was named most valuable player of the regional.

USC regional. We were sitting in the outfield & everybody was giving Jacque Jones hell; of course he would trot back out with a big smile after he homered. At the end of the game, everyone in the outfield gave him a standing ovation. He was pretty cool about it all.

Most intense "game" was more of an intense "pre-game"; the season opener after the summer we lost Wally. That was tough.

I remember there was a rain delay somewhere in the usc or maybe just a delayed start - anyway we were in tiger stadium drinking a few beers and delayed our getting back to the ballgame when we attempt to cross Nicholson we see a baseball tumbling across Nicholson.
