Gave the Fitbit Flex to several people for Christmas, they all like it.

I'd stay away from Nike Fuel Band considering they essentially fired their entire Nike Fuel team and publicly stated they're abandoning the hardware part.

I got the fitbit force a while back. Its just like the flex except you can see your stats on the band itself. It actually does motivate me to be more active

You may want to consider the Garmin Vivofit. Battery lasts a year, synchs automatically with an iPhone 5, and has a LED display.

had the fitbit force but was allergic to it. Have the flex and love it.

Opinion. Fitbit worn by fat people. Like diet drinks, will not make you skinny. For $50 I will count your steps.

Have an UP band. Used it religiously for a few months, not so much lately.

Are any of these bands waterproof and able to track swimming distance?

I use the Jawbone UP24 and love it. I've had it on everyday and night since Thansgiving 2013 and it's tracked my walking, running and sleep. About 3 months into it, the first band started to give out, and the company replaced it for free. Totally great customer service, and the new 1 year warranty kicked inon the replacement. I very highly recommend it.
