So on a rig of that size how do overnight or week long excursions go.

Do you have your own capt? Isn't there a size requirement for having a captain and crew aboard?

Does someone have to be at the wheel at all times?

It's a length thing.

When we ran sportfishers the rule of thumb for us was anything over 50' and we'd need a full-time captain and one DH. They are employed year round.

Under 50' you can get away with self if you are willing to work.

The 60' Hat I used to fish for years was cleaned tower to cockpit weekly and after every trip. It was waxed monthly(the fricking gnats in Venice loved this ). Oil changes were fun as well.

Depending on how much you fish maintenance can get crazy. Just fuel for one overnighter usually ran in the $5,000 range. Bait/tackle $1,000. Alcohol $1,000, etc. It helps if either the captain or the DH is a certified CAT mechanic as well.

On overnighters there is always a watch at the helm. Most of the time we are fishing anyway so there are a few people up all night intermittently. This is handled by captain, DH, guests, whoever.

Usually the owner/guests handle DH duties while fishing to help out. The reason you need a DH on staff is when you are not fishing. On a boat over this size the captain can't handle the upkeep himself. Also traveling captains (captains willing to take the boat anywhere the owner wants to go) are a whole different story.

there isn't a requirement for you to be a licensed captain if you own the boat. if you are going to charge someone to be their captain then you would have to have a license. That boat will have a captain and probably 2 crew full time and in tournament situations maybe up to 4 crew unless the owner/family likes to work hard.

Crew and captain full time, boat probably goes to 3-4 different places around world to fish a year also fishes a summer tournament schedule and the owner flies in to fish for a week at a time or sends guests/ friends to fish. It's tough to beat showing up, everything is perfect and ready to go and crew prefished for a few days and know where the fish are so you get right on them
