develop a regular pre-shot routine you are comfortable with. Whether it be a few full practice swings.. half swings.. a few waggles of the club.. whateve
please no. we have too many hackers out there taking 4 practice swings before each shot and making two laps around every green to plumb bob putts. none of that is helpful and slows pace of play big time. Get your yardage, asses the correct club. one or non quick practice swing adn then go find it.

All the good pre shot routines involve flicking a cig at the target right before you set up over the ball.
I get so mad when people take their practice cuts, waggle, and have no cig in their mouth to flick right before the take away.
I place a lot of the blame here on tiger woods.

Every decent golfer has a pre-shot routine.

This is a pre-shot routine.

yes, people who play for $1m a week need a pre-shot routine. we don't need hackers taking 2 minutes before every shot with a "routine"...I've noticed people standing over the ball or taking more time before each shot usually ends in disaster

True.
Also, waiting for the green to clear on a par 5 when oldy mc floppy balls is 280 out with a 3 wood in his hands gets my blood movin.

Doesn't have to last more than a few seconds. As long as it is the same each time.

I clean the grooves after each shot. That is longer than me setting up and pulling the trigger.
My babies are forged, and need to be caressed like an infant toddler with the hiccups.

If you read any books, I would suggest reading books on course management and the mental side. I tried to read some books that involved mechanics and it did nothing but screw me up. However, after reading some books on the mental aspect of the game, I've seen improved scores.
I went from not being able to break 100 last January to breaking 80 twice last summer. Just from playing almost everyday, and playing with some scratch golfers most of the time.
If I could have afforded it or afford it now, I would get lessons. Get rid of any bad swing flaws before they become habits.

immediate goals should be:

Eliminate penatly strokes
That was my first thought. Of course everyone is different, but for me, course management got me over the hump. Taking doubles and higher really drop your score quickly. I do have one question for the OP. He made a comment about only using clubs he can handle. I've never understood why people have clubs in their bag that they don't feel comfortable using. If you can't use it, take it out.

This pisses me off to no end, then Oldy chunks it 50 yards in front of him and we have to wait again........

I'm sure you can. I wasn't talking about a player of your caliber.
280 out, I'm pin high 93% of the time. Occasionally I'll get a flier lie, and have to chip back at the hole.
But the average tiger fan out there needs to hit it to a number and get on in 3.
