Can you guess who this quote is from...

No fair looking it up. We're all on the honor system up in here...
“Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.”

That's an easy one. I'll let someone else take a stab.

Don't know... somebody who was trying to sound deep but failed, though.

Haha, yeah ok.

Go ahead, Homesick, can't wait to see what Rex has to say about the failure.

My guess is Reagan. My second choice would be JFK.

I heard Wilkow quote this recently, but I can't recall the source.

quote:
Go ahead, Homesick
I have absolutely no idea. I was hoping someone would come up with the right answer that I could agree with. Busted - but honest.

Whomever it was, they were correct.

I thought it was Churchill, I was wrong so I was impatient and looked it up, turns out it was a Frenchman. Here it is in the original French.

Ah what a deep thought from the pile of dog shite.

It's from F.A. Hayek ... but he is paraphrasing (and giving attribution to) Alexis deTocqueville.

You win! And thanks for spelling his name right. I was guessing the spelling in my post.

The wife has a very old print of his book. I got the hint that it was a Frenchman from a post above, so I cheated slightly.

It's not deep because it's a lexical semantic failure. Democracy and socialism have much more in common than just the word equality or even the notion of equality. The quote first constructs a false premise only for the purpose of sounding clever later... and then fails to sound clever.

Alexis de Tocqueville?
Kudos to you. Ever have one of those moments when you say "I knew that, wish I'd said it first"?
This was not one of those moments for me. Oh well.
