5 month old puppy leg being amputated.. Updated

Our new puppy, that I posted pics of the other day, loves to ride with me. Took him with me down the street last night and was in a different truck (one of our work trucks) and he decides to bail out the window as he's leaned up on the window getting air. Always like the window so I wasn't the least bit worried about him. Not sure what got into him but we were going very slow so I was hopeful. Stopped and knew his leg was broke right away. Long story short, I took him straight in to emergency vet and they xrayed, gave pain meds and splinted. Took him to my vet this morning and he recommended amputation because it shattered his distal femur (top of his knee including growth plate).
Really hate it, but I've seen dogs appearing to live a normal life after. Never been through it myself though. Any advice on what to expect down the road would be appreciated. TIA
ETA: Back left leg if that matters. Back seems better to me for balance reasons but I really dont have a clue.

One of the best dogs I ever owned had 3 legs. Some yotes got a hold of him one night, lucky he survived at all (terrier.) Once he recovered he could out run his sister who had all 4 legs, and was still very spirited. It's tough for a bit, but the adapt quickly and so will you. Good luck, prayers for pooch.

Good to hear. Back leg? Thats what I was wanting to hear but haven't been around one much.

Best of luck to the pup. I bet he will adjust quickly, especially being so young...

sorry to hear that.
He should be able to do whatever he wants, just not jump as high.

Langston, my buddy has a dog that got run over. He ended up losing a front leg. He's cool as shite and still very athletic. They will do just fine! Hope everything goes well with your puppy.

Get him an eye patch and he will get good to go for his Halloween costume...

My american bulldog has 3.5 legs. His front right leg essentially a peg leg that doesn't bend at the elbow. He gets around fine, and he's extremely top heavy.
Pup will have an adjustment period and never look back.

Had a cur once.. Found her one Christmas, named her Noel..found her tangled up in a fence and the leg was starting to get infected.. She did good with three legs.. It was the back right leg.. She ran fine and everything..

I've known some great 3 legged dogs. Doesn't even slow them down.

Glad to hear fellas. Had a ton of dogs and while I've always liked them, never got attached to them like the last few... becoming soft in my old age
Good to have the reassurance since this is new to me. Thanks I will update after we get him back.

I had a 3 legged dog growing up, he was the fastest SOB on the block. He will adapt just fine.

A front leg slows them down a bit, but they can still get around fine. The dogs I've been around with a missing back leg still hauled arse and kept up with the other dogs.

That pup will be fine, he's young and will bounce back quick.
