Anything over $200 for a personal return is a fricking rip off. Its just a matter of checking a few boxes and doing a google search.

I just filed for an extension. Turbo Tax said I owed $6K in federal and $1K in state taxes. I think when my wife started working last year, we didn't file her W4 properly. I paid the state tax and mailed a check for $2K along with Form 4868. I need some sometime to regroup and see if we can find more deductions.

This is the first time I have underpaid my taxes. Do you think the IRS will penalize me for under payment or something?

An extension does not extend the due date for your taxes, only your tax return. An extension filed without payment of the tax due is defective, and the IRS may assess late filing penalties in addition to late payment penalties. You can always request the IRS waive any penalties on the grounds you didn't have the money and need an installment arrangement to pay the tax when you file your return. I don't know if it will work, but you can give it a try.

My mom uses some lady who operates after hours out of her house and she's gotten me an appointment the last few years. I think she has a full time job and does taxes on the side. Cost me $75 for the wife and I. My stuff is pretty simple, so I don't see the reason to pay hundreds of dollars, but I'd rather someone a little more experienced fill it out for us.
