Jar of pickles and they are only about 6 months old. I don't leave things in there very long.

I don't think we have anything older than 6 months in our fridge. Maybe closer to 3. We only buy stuff we use regularly, and we try to use what we buy before we buy more groceries.

Doesn't surprise me having recently watch a show that dealt with the process created it. A vat of the original mixture was considered a failure(gag me with a spoon type of stuff), but the stuff wasn't thrown out. Two years later the vat was reopened and the taste had mellowed. A few more ingredients were added to it and a bit more of time to age ensued. That recipe is what you get today.
