State your case for or against.

Personally, I fall into the camp of believing that there is life outside of our own world. I think the line from Contact about sums it up. With as big as the universe is and if we are the only living beings in it, it sure seems like a big waste of space (pun intended). That and it's very likely that some of these other beings are more advanced technologically than us. I do not subscribe to the tin foil hat conspiracy theories, however. Maybe some of the Ancient Alien type stuff where they have already visited but the government coverup type stuff is just too out there for me.

Funny that all the UFO shite is from the 70's when almost nobody had cameras. Now we have them on every street and haven't seen shite.

That said, I believe.

Just warning you, good chance of this getting anchored. Too similar to the other thread and vague thread title

Anyone who believes there isn't life outside of our planet somewhere in the vast expanses of the cosmos is either brain dead stupid or arrogant beyond repair. I don't care if this life is intelligent or not. Any man who honestly believes that no other life form exists outside of this planet is absurdly ignorant and arrogant.

Life, yes. Self-aware intelligent life, no.

Enadious was probably the best poster TD has had at enumerating all the factoids on why it would be improbable, but really, it's silly to even speculate on numerical odds of things when nobody can even say if the physical universe is infinite or not.

There are so many gray areas between life and non-life, that of course I think that some kind of self-replicating matter with a growth-and-death life cycle exists out there, but consciousness and intelligence is a whole different thing, and just from very basic abstract philosophical principles, I tend to believe that the chances of self-awareness arising from inanimate matter is practically zero. I don't believe, for example, that anyone will ever create a computer that becomes self-aware. There's no way to prove that wrong, and I used to believe the very opposite thing, but that's just the direction my thought has traveled in as certain principles have become clearer to me.

Given the size of the universe and the projected habitability of several known worlds, I believe it likely that "life" exists outside of Earth. Keep in mind that bacteria qualify as life. The chances that some planet/moon/spacecraft is harboring complex beings capable of space exploration (or capable of even pondering these questions) is substantially less. It's tough to quantify. There have been instances in the history of life on Earth where it could have easily ceased to exist. It will certainly cease to exist sometime between now and when the sun begins to shift phases. There's no guarantee that there is intelligent life in the universe "right now"--even accounting for what we can call star or interstellar time and the extraordinary distances separating us from other systems, sections of the Milky Way, and (esp) other galaxies and galaxy clusters.

I am 99.9999999% positive there is life on other places than Earth.

It's a near statistical impossibility that some form of life does not exist somewhere in the vastness of space which we cannot even wrap our minds around.

Intelligent life is another discussion. Personally, I think there very well could be some out there. That's not to say they've been here before, have the technology to travel here, or even know of our existence...I just think with the quadrillion or so stars out that it's possible that sentient life did evolve, not unlike it did here.

It is an almost mathematic certainty that there is life out there in the cosmos besides us. It is downright narcissism to believe otherwise.

I firmly believe there is life outside of our planet, though "life" is a very broad term.

And no, I don't believe we've been visited.

Every Christian believes there is intelligent life out there somewhere and they have been here. They may not own up to it in those terms but where else would heaven be??
