It would help to list the options for 2010 and 2014:
2010 defenders:
Bocanegra
DeMerit
Onyewu
Cherundolo
Bornstein
Spector (DNP)
Goodson (DNP)
Likely 2014 Defenders:
Besler
Gonzales
Cameron
F. Johnson
Goodson
Beasley?
Parkhurst?
Evans?
2010 defenders:
Bocanegra
DeMerit
Onyewu
Cherundolo
Bornstein
Spector (DNP)
Goodson (DNP)
Likely 2014 Defenders:
Besler
Gonzales
Cameron
F. Johnson
Goodson
Beasley?
Parkhurst?

At peak form would be a close battle with

Besler
Gonzales
Cameron
F. Johnson
As of 2010/2014 form, I'll go with our current options, assuming JK plays Cameron at RB and Johnson at LB.
Could we not very well see this at the WC instead:
Beasley Besler Gonzales Evans
In that case, I'll take 2010 even with Boca at LB.

We have to remember that our backline shifted before the Algeria game from:
Bocanegra-DeMerit-Onyewu-Cherundolo
to
Bornstein-Bocanegra-DeMerit-Cherundolo
Bocanegra-DeMerit-Onyewu-Cherundolo
to
Bornstein-Bocanegra-DeMerit-Cherundolo

Remember that Gooch was coming off of the ACL injury and was 70% at best. We also have to remember that Bornstein was surprisingly solid in the Algeria and Ghana matches.

Neither were/are good enough. We've struggled producing quality, international level, defensive players.
Omar needs to get his stuff together, because in my mind, he's too much of a liability to start right now. Besler is the only sure thing across our back line, which is kind of scary in itself.

I'd say Cameron is pretty reliable defender and Fabian if he plays there. We're really only missing a CB to pair with Besler.

This.
It comes down to if one of Gonzales/Goodson/Brooks/Gooch (All 4 will be in the May camp) can step up. Unfortunately, all 4 of those guys make my arse clinch.

It might end up being Cameron, which is why I didn't include him as a "sure thing." He will start, I'm just not ready to pen him in as a RB. I mean, after the Mexico game, after a media person asked about Omar's play, Jurgen's quote was something along the lines of..."We have Cameron, who can play there."
I have no idea what he plans on doing with Fab, six months ago I would have said winger. Right now, I'm not so sure.

That's our problem. We need a big guy. I know Gooch hasn't been the same for quite some time, but I think I trust him over Omar at this point.

I think I agree with you.

In all of the 2014 friendlies, Gooch has looked the best (outside of Besler, of course). He rated well against Ukraine, but it was just that Brooks left him out to dry way too many times.

My first USA Jersey was a Spector jersey.

He's been playing consistently for Wednesday and has looked solid supposedly. They've been doing much better since he got there. Several shutouts. And then he makes these Vermaelen-like runs up the field that are hilarious.

One thing I worry about with post-ACL injury Gooch is his play in the air. Can he still get up for the headers?
Posted on 4/8/14 at 8:37 pm to Broski
Probably so. It would be hard to be a productive CB if you can't get headers.
Also he tore his patellar tendon, not ACL. Just fyi.
