I'm completely torn after 6 pages of debate so I have decided to go with the every other one plan.
Release one eat one.
I will catch another the next time I put jugs out and he will be eaten.

No problem with eating them, I have and they're good. However I throw them back once they get a certain age. More than enough small and midsize ones around.
