Andrew Sullivan was a Republican years ago. What turned him was that he became a single issue voter and the single issue was gay marriage. He got mad when he couldn't convince Republicans to support legalizing gay marriage.

His motivation was not to get married 'I don't want to get married. I want the option to get married.'
His belief was that legalizing gay marriage would lead to gayness being viewed as normal, which is a step beyond 'acceptance.'

IE, we accept that some people are confined to a wheelchair. But we do not view it as normal.
