gun safe - humidity question

Recently purchased a gun safe for the house. It has a plug built in so I mounted a DE-humidifier and added 2 of the REM dry bags. Question is the electric rod does not have any lights or indicators that it is on or working. What is the best way to test that? add some wet bread and see if it dries? or a cigar and see how fast it dries out?
any recommendations or experience to keeping it dry?
thanks for the input and help.

You could spend money on a "hygrometer", but I'm dubious about the inexpensive ones' accuracy and resolution.
If you have a Kill A Watt electricity gauge you can see if the rod is drawing electricity (a good sign it's working).

do the rods feels warm? if not, then they aren't working. I have a simple 8watt rod and it gets almost hot.
As far as the dry bags go just remember they only absorb a finite amount of moisture before needing tossing or "recharging". Dry bags work best in situations where the container is almost never opened.
Best thing one can do to keep moisture in check is keep guns/safe in an air-conditioned area.

is this really needed if the gun safe is stored inside your house? the AC takes care of the humidity....

Dry rod is just a low-power heater to maintain the inside of the safe at a constant temperature above dew-point. As long as the safe isn't exposed to large changes in temperature and you've properly oiled/cleaned the guns then there is really little to worry about.

Missing pieces. It is bolted down in the garage, too dang big to get back in the closet. Possibility of moving it upstairs, but my wife just had wooden stairs done and I would die in my sleep if I F'ed them up moving a safe. So keep the rod and maybe load up on the bags? 5-10 of them? I have 2 electrical plugs so I could get some other form of dehumidifier? I need to search the innerwebs and see whats out there. Lots of good info here, thanks for the input.

There are rechargeable dehumidifiers that you can install but there is nothing you can plug in aside from the dry rod and a set of small LED lights if you wanted. Even in the garage you'll be fine with just the dry rod, dehumidifier, and coating of CLP.

I'm not sure think you can rely 100% on your home A/C unit.
I use these my my safes (situated in air conditioned rooms) : LINK -- and they still need "recharging" every few weeks.
It probably falls in the "belt & suspenders" category ..... but it's a cheap form of extra corrosion prevention.

Depending on how big the safe is get one of these:
and a look into these.
I keep a few of the VC-1's and that dehumidifier in my gun cabinet. My stuff is inside and air conditioned but means the dehumidifier will go months and months without needing to be recharged.

Put one of these in there and you can monitor it.
