I will be 22 soon and I wholeheartedly believe I will see the USA win a World Cup in my lifetime.

I guess if we can avoid playing Ghana ever again then anything is possible.

I'd say our youth development is much better than it was less than 20 years ago.
Absolutely.

It's only going to get better as the MLS academies improve and the league itself grows.
This is the hope, but depending on how they are structured, they could aid or alleviate the problem.

I see no reason why we can't.

Considering I plan on living through this summer, yes.

We were a half away from winning the Confederations Cup. By our standards that was huge and an indication that with the right amount of luck and pieces falling into place, it could happen.
Plus if any of these young strikers we are bringing into the fold pan out, watch out.

If we can get Green, Zelalem (assuming we get him), and the young guys at the La Liga academies to pan out, we will make some noise in 2022.

as is the chance we will overhaul our entire youth structure and philosophy.
It seems that we are already doing these things, and while it will be much harder to comprehensively overhaul our youth structure, what players are doing is far more important than how or where they're doing it.
We've gotten to where we are on the backs of players who participated in organized practices for three hours a week, played in far too many games over the weekend and didn't even watch soccer until they signed a professional contract (looking at you, Landon Donovan).

And lots of naturalized US citizens. This shows that a lot of things can be undone. But I'm not sure that the plateau we've reached of the knock-out stages is any more than we can reasonably hope for, barring major catastrophe in Europe and South America.

I should also point out that the how and where of how they are doing it will give us a deeper pool, whereas we can say that the players who are exceeding the limitations of the structure are merely outliers.

I wasn't using that to advance the argument that we'll win the World Cup in the foreseeable future, simply that it's not really that hard to change things and we already are changing things.
Correct, but we're not really hurting for participation, though more is always nice.
They're professional soccer players. They're all outliers.

Relative to one another, of course. A La Masia grad is an outlier here, etc.

I know. I was messing with you. However, I think that to a certain extent, everyone relies upon those sorts of players.

No.
I´d think quarters and even semis, would be achieved, however.

A population of 300+ million and the best athletic training in the world is going to win out eventually.
