Sight fished for......The White Perch

New one on me. I've seen Doug Stange do it in yankee waters, but never thought it would be something I would take part in. Thanks to one of our fine members, I investigated a cove at Indian Creek once I got frustrated with seeing 500 bass that would not bite. When I got to the back of the pocket, I saw fish errywhere. Most were chinqs and very small bass, then I saw a black fish on a bed. Male crappie.
I put on the most sublte jig I could find and sure enough, they would bite. Many times, they would mouth the bait and my cork would not move. I nver caught one that did that. I had to either see the cork move, or confirm that the mouth was fully closed.
Well, those were all small. I backed out and could see groups of fish, but could not confirm what they were. I threw in, and cork was gone immediately. I sat there and caught fish I could see for over an hour. The size was poor to very poor with a large one mixed in here and there. Kept 20, and most had eggs unfortunately. Threw back at least that many. All from a spot the size of a 70s station wagon. I never tried another cove, as I had to leave. May never see that again.
I'll be going back soon with red wigglers. I saw over 100 chings in there. Should be nesting in the next couple of weeks.

me and my brother did this when Toledo was really low a couple of years ago
went to bass fish, but could see the white perch on beds all around us, so started fishing with a beetlespin and had one of the most fun trips on Toledo ever

That's exactly the situation I was describing the other day when we were talking about Chinquapin's bedding up, and being a sign of the end of the white perch spawn.
Get them perches while you can...

The old limp line trick would serve you well in this scenario.
Take a pair of pliers and open the hook angle up away from the body of the jig. This will cause it to get hung more if there is trash/structure in the area but it works. With no cork and using the longest jig pole you are comfortable with (12' for me) you simply drop jig in the area and very very slowly move it up and down. Notice I didn't say "jig" it up and down. Very slowly move it up and down and when you see slack in the line that means the fish has mouthed your jig. If you can see the fish it works even better but I have done this in 10' of water with great results as well.

Opening the hook angle gets you a hook set deeper in the mouth where the fish is tougher. You can "hoss" a white perch to the boat if he is hooked deep in the mouth.

When did you get the new blue boat?

Zoom! Right over my head.
Choirboy, I eventually caught all those mouthers. They would bite every time I threw in there. I just missed a few the first cast due to premature hook set.
