i think the argument goes, if this is about science, then why do we even need to know that much about religious persecution?

Because that was a huge hurdle science had to overcome to actually be considered. The Church's influence was so great, it is a necessary topic to show science breaking through.

I guess I just don't see the harm in it. Plus, it was episode one, where we begin the cosmic journey. We have to start somewhere.
