There was a Japanese airliner several years ago that had something wrong with it. They knew they wouldn't be able to land, but it didn't go down immediately. People had time to write notes to their loved ones and stick them in their pockets.

Says most of the trip is over land, id like to think if it went down someone would have seen and reported it. As mentioned above, hopefully it's just an electrical malfunction

Mostly jungle, I would guess. If someone did see it, it may be hours or days before they can get to a phone.
