1. i think ukraine has somethings putin wants, but i think this is mostly a test or a diversion for something else

2. i think this is a test of western europe much more than a test of the USA/Obama

3. China's involvement, or lack thereof, will be telling

Yes.

My feeling is if Putin feels he can bully Europe on Ukraine then he will try to bully Europe on gas pricing. Isn't Ukraine a major pipeline for Russian gas going through to Europe? I think it was a kerfuffle over pipelines that began the woman PM of Ukraine's end right? I'm going on shaky memory here, but if Putin can bully his way into control of those pipelines then he can raise prices which will hurt the EU while enriching himself, his friends, and Russia.

I think he's saving face after fricking up with the revolution. He's reasserting himself.

This is exactly right.

I would add 4) we invade countries pretty regularly, so we set the model its ok.

Putin has helped destroy his currency.

He knows what he is doing? I wouldn't be so sure as Russia is now going into a tailspin with oil under $50 a barrel. Everyone is ditching rubles for dollars in Russia. I'm sure that's what Putin wants?

What is there that is cheaper to get via an expensive military invasion rather than simply buying?
