My compressor just went out.

What's the ballpark price for a middle-class 4 ton ac unit (I'm thinking Rheem or similar) including installation (outside unit only). I'm waiting on a price from my AC guy, but is this the type of thing it's worth shopping around for?

How much of a difference does it make to step up to a more efficient unit?

More efficient unit makes a big difference. You should without a doubt shop around. This is one of the most expensive parts of an HVAC unit to replace. Check prices.

i got prices a few months ago, but for a 5 ton american standard.

the one thing this particualr guy kept asking was "how long do you plan on staying here?"

i assume he was asking because, why spend top dollar if i will only enjoy it a few years

I'm in the same boat. I have a 2 br, 2.5 bath townhome and my a/c struggles bigtime during the summer. Its about 25 years old so it's time for a new one. I don't need anything fancy, and honestly, I probably won't be in the house for more than another 5 years or so so i don't need anything fancy. I don't even know where to start. Who's your a/c guy?
