on almost every food item on your grocery list. Produce will be first in my mind due to drought in California. Beef and milk prices will definitely be near to the top as herds are at record low numbers at the ranches. Other items will have higher prices as the feed cost of animals on the farm climb higher.

This is great news for the working man.

Will it affect the amount of food stamps Barry gives the children?

It really is getting bad.
I might actually have to start shopping at Walmart if this crap keeps up.
Talked to a guy from California last night and he said it is the worst he has ever seen in the central part of the state. Big time crop losses, etc.

We are probably splitting a half calf with another couple this spring, may grab a pig too.
That and the deer meat should put us in good shape meat wise.

She asked me to pray for rain at church! Said she was trying to cover all her bases.

Start up your tiller going and the plants in the ground, and get the chickens in the pens ASAP. A goat or two might be a thought too.

It's raining all week there now. Still, Nov. thru Jan was the driest period there since the 1880s. They rely on winter rains to fill up all the reservoirs, which are looooow.

The allocation of the water resources by the state and federales is not helping the farmers and ranchers at all. It seems to me they want the farmers to be driven out of business.

OP - yeah, it's been really dry here (raining like hell as I type though). The first good storm didn't even raise the river level....zero run-off. The real issue is snow pack in the Sierras. I'm not looking forward to this summer for sure. The whole central valley is gonna be one huge dust bowl.

pork prices aren't bad right now, though. Chicken should be decent too.

but they're about to get bad. industry lost lots of little piggies to disease recently. May not be as bad as beef, but pork is about to increase too.
Yard bird FTW.

Just wait a bit on the pig costs to rise. Milk and its other uses(cheeses etc.) are up in price already(5.00 per gallon or nearly that) and it is not going to drop lower as the herds are culled by ranchers.

how are you connecting the ppg of milk and the cost of pork?
Posted on 2/27/14 at 1:09 pm to tigerinthebueche
I didn't, you did that yourself. The first sentence is about pork and the second is about cows and their byproducts.

Lean hog futures are up 25% since the beginning of February.
