The point is that Evolution is, most definitely, the unifying theory of biology.

However, it is not required to have a deep understanding of it to teach the basic biology taught in HS.

At a deeper level, if one was say, a biology major, obviously a deep understanding would be needed.

Well I'm on the side of teaching the kids more than less. An introduction to evolution isn't an overly complicated subject and certainly above a high-school level or even a middle school one. To say we don't need to teach it because of the "controversy" is simply giving in letting the lowest common denominator of people dictate what is included in the curriculum.
