On climate change, That was minor scandal. Its dishonesty is enormously pale in comparison to fraudulent organizations like Heartland and Heritage.
On Paine, just because a text isn't divinely-generated, doesn't mean that it can't be a source of wisdom for human beings--even of wisdom about the nature of the God.
No one thinks that Aristotle's Metaphysics is divinely-inspired, yet many including Christians have used it to understand God for thousands of years.

He was making arguments on two fronts.
He was saying that the bible was mistranslated as well as stating the fallacies within the text.
It was a two-pronged approach to breakdown the wall of generational belief in the book.
I'm sorry you can't understand the basis of his work: that the bible was not to be revered.

really? Thomas Paine? I thought the Age of Reason was amusing at best from a theological/scriptural standpoint. I haven't read it in a while. It's on my shelf, so maybe I'll reread soon.

in spite of my strict religious upbringing (CoC, I dont think I ever really believed. Reading the book forced me to really take an honest look at my religion. To me, the innaccuracies in the old testament that the book addresses are undeniable. If left me believing that there is no possible way for this to be the literal word of God

Psalms
Psalms is really just a book of religious hymns and poems. I wouldn't take it so much as God's word to us as ours to Him. Still very worthwhile, just not one of the books I would use as a guideline.
My beef with Paine's premise is that he assumes it's impossible for us to improve our understanding of the historical and cultural context in which the Bible was written. Archeologists are learning more about the ancient Near East every day, and that knowledge can help us develop a better understanding of what Biblical texts meant at the time they were recorded by the scribes.

Ironic considering the fact that Paine was a Deist.
