[/quote]Dale Brown was a hell of a motivator and a good man, but as an X's and O's coach he was lacking. What he was able to achieve just on motivation is quite remarkable.

It also proves you can't win national championships on motivation alone. Ask Bobby Knight.

It's already been stated here but I'll repeat if for you since you obviously missed it. The GT team that he lost to that year had 4 NBA players on it (3 first rounders, 2 top 5 picks). So maybe Dale didn't lose with the "greatest team ever assembled".
But lets say you are right, wouldn't it be nice if JJ could assemble the greatest team in the history of CBB and make it to a final four? Or would you complain about that too like you are with Dale?

"Hey, that guy assembled the greatest team CBB has ever seen and went all the way to the final four. What a shitty coach. Derp!"

Do you even read what you post? You are complaining about a guy who assembled what you call the greatest team ever and went to the final four.

Ask Bobby Knight what his basketball budget was and compare it to Dale Brown's budget. Knight was bailed out of a regional final against Dale because the officials did not have the balls to throw his arse out the game.

You have learned nothing over the past 17 years if you can't see how hard it is to win big at LSU in basketball.

The fact that Dale could motivate alone makes him better than JJ at this point. His teams look like they don't give a shite.

I was no giant fan of Dale Brown, but you just might have something there.

No. Phi Slamma Jamma and the Fab Five say hello (there are others). Phi Slamma Jamma had two of the eventual top 50 NBA players of all time on their team.
LSU was very talented though. Georgia Tech was equally talented.

Ask anyone that played at LSU when Rick Huckabay was an assistant and they will tell you that he was the real coach of the teams. Dale just motivated them.

Motivating your team is one of the biggest parts of being a great coach. You can know your Xs and Os like nobody else, but if you can't motivate your team to play hard and do what you've taught them, you'll lose to "inferior" teams more than you should. Xs and Os are important too, but it's part of the winning equation just like motivation. Dale knew some Xs and Os too. He upset the eventual NCAA runner up in his first game at LSU. I'm gonna go ahead and assume we didn't have special talent then.

Everybody forgets that he ended his career with 4 losing seasons.

I don't think anybody has forgotten that. It's just overshadowed by all the success he had at a place that had nothing going on in basketball before he came along.

I think Dale Brown was a much better XO guy than he will ever get credit for.

From the middle of the 86 season until the end of the 88 season, the Tigers were one of the most ferocious defensive teams in the NCAA. This happened because of the infamous "Freak" defense. The key to it all was that the defense shifted it's set to different zones or man-to-man based on how the opponent brought the ball across the half-court line. As a result, no opposing team could read the LSU defense, and some really good teams struggled against it. It was like you were playing against the Syracuse zone on one trip and the Indiana man-to-man on the next.

That defense took the 86 team, which had only 1 NBA talent (John "Hot Lunch" Williams) to the Final Four. It took the 87 team with two freshman point guards (Fess Irvin and Darryl Joe!) to the Elite Eight, and would have gone to the Final Four except for a very unfortunate collapse. The 88 team's best player was Ricky Blanton, and they earned a trip to the NCAA's. Even the 89 team, with CJ, was a great defensive team, beating a #2 Georgetown in the Dome with their point guard completely confused as to the defense he was facing. They also beat UNLV in the Deaf Dome, when that name meant something.

Unfortunately, he must have believed that talent would win championships alone when Shaq showed up. Then again, he got the team to the NCAAs with Geert Hammick as the center, so he still had some magic.

No one has duplicated the "Freak", though it has been written up in coaching manuals. To me that means Dale was pretty good with the clipboard.

largely because of the NCAA set up regarding Lester Earl. Dale had the balls to speak against the NCAA, that did him in

If JJ is Brown 2.0, is Elbert Robinson Shaq 2.0?

7 feet, 300 lbs with a hook shot.

Give JJ a chance. Very few coaches have instant success. Even good players sometimes take a while to gel.

The Brooklyn Nets were supposed to be really good, but the first half of the year was horrible for them, and those are professionals and multiple players there have won championships.

JJ has 18 to 22 year old young men. We'll be fine, give it time.

Give Coach Jones some time. Good God, our fans and students don't show up to support the team, but bash a 2nd year coach that starts 2 frosh and has 2 5'8'' guards trying to run his press and play defense against much taller guards. Does anyone on this board understand the game and see that every team we play dominates our guards?
