Flaws in the American Political System Open thread

When you vote for president in america you may suddenly realize it isn't a vote for who you want, so much as a vote against who you don't.
The reason is that the election is done by a first to a majority method. This alters the actual outcomes of future elections.
I think its bad for america. A huge flaw in the system if you really want 'a republic'.

here's the solution to what ails you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting
don't expect the republicans or democrats to implement it ever if they can help it. it threatens both of their power base

At this point I view Democrat and Republican parties as Govt enabled monopolies. No surprise they are ineffective, corrupt, and generally inefficient at achieving their aims.

Two:
1/ Payroll withholding. Eliminate it and make people write checks for what they pay. More transparent.
2/ unequal taxation. Incentivizes "the poor" to vote themselves more money. If we are all equal citizens, we should pay the same tax.
Fix those two things, and the rest will fix itself.

how?
Here is an explanation
Seriously though:
Spoiler effect means that if you vote third party you are actually helping the party you least agree with.
The cost of running a campaign means that there will only be two main parties.
That ensures that you have to stay with one of the two established parties or lose your vote's importance. That sucks.

Abolish the political state.

More transparent? Look at your paystubb. Its got the numbers you're looking for on it. I'm not really sure what could be more transparent than telling you exactly what is withheld down to the penny in the same document that your check comes in (or that acts as a receipt for direct deposit. You aren't asking for more transparency - you're asking for more paperwork.
By your logic, checks themselves aren't 'transparent' - employers should pay everyone their entire paycheck in pennies, that way its more 'transparent' because the employees will have a more tangible feeling of their earnings.

you still end up with a two party system, with one replaced.

What we need up in here is some re-form.

I cannot tell you how many times employees have told me they don't pay taxes, they get free money every year!
Second, one cannot miss what they never had. Because they do not see their bank account being drained periodically, it's like they never earned it. They did. It's their money. And it's being taken.
quote:Nope. As a business owner, it would vastly reduce my paperwork burden. Why should I have to bear the burden of my workers tax filing? I'm not a collection agency.
You aren't asking for more transparency - you're asking for more paperwork.
Its funny though, your b*tching about added paperwork is exactly what I mean about increasing transparency... That burden fully exists, but is hidden from you... Thanks.

quote:Not quite so smooth and easy. It takes not only a majority (plurality?) voting to elect a President with the electoral college going along, but it also takes that 3rd party electing a viable number of candidates to Congress (House/Senate) and capturing a fair share of Governors and State Legislative seats. This would tend to happen over a series of elections and not just one tumultuous election. See the elections that preceded the GOP displacing the Whigs. Or note in more recent times the shift in the old "Solid South" from being predominantly (exclusively) Southern democrats to republicans getting competitive, to republicans winning majorities in Southern state legislatures, Congressional/Senate delegations/governor seats.

Judicial review.
The allowing of non-property owners to vote.
Not making everyone pass the citizenship test in order to be eligible to vote.

I've been saying this for years. The revolution would start instantly.

1) The head of the executive should be selected by Congress and serve one four year term. No more elected President.
2) Abolish the 17th Amendment
