Cure gets a lot of the credit, but Zeus' Place was the first new commercial activity on Freret. I moved into the neighborhood in 2008, and it was probably about two years after that when things really started to move.
Cure came online in 2010 (I want to say), Adolfo Garcia bought the buildings for High Hat and Ancora, Company Burger opened, and the rest is history.
One thing in hindsight that really pushed it forward was probably that killing in front of the old Friar Tucks. I think that galvanized the city and neighborhood to push out older businesses and beef up safety.
However or whenever it happened, its awesome.

Good point. At one time Valence Street towards the lake from Freret was one of the major areas for crack dealing in the city. It is a fantastic transformation. Driving around the side streets there is definitely some gentrification taking place.
