re: Writing a journal to your child

Not specifically to my child, since I don't have one. Back when I was hovering around rock bottom and going through a really shitty period I started writing a daily journal sort of recounting my steps and actions through the day. I'd keep track of every penny I had, what I spent, what I made, and my thoughts revolving around pulling myself out of the gutter.
Many of the posts I'd write a paragraph to my nephew who was just a few months old then. It really helped me monitor spending on less than necessary things, and really helped me evaluate myself and actions from the outside look in. Was a different perspective.
I think writing something like a journal to your kids is an amazingly brilliant thing to do. Too often we don't speak what we feel as we go through day to day life. In the event of something tragic happening those journals could be the best therapy imaginable.

Sounds like it could be therapy to the author too (not that journals as therapy is news).

I've written to our son in a journal since his birth. I started by telling him about us and how happy he made us. As he gets older, I write funny things he said or did, random thoughts about his personality, his successes and some lessons he's learned.

That's good stuff. When do you plan on giving it to him?

I have one for each of my 3 kids ... I don't write every day ... nto even every month BUT I do address the important and big things as well as some of the little things.
Started when my oldest was almost 8 ... #2 was 3 and #3 was in utero. Just talk about the cute things, the messy things, the days when ** I ** wasn't as good as I could have been (more of an apology I guess?), going to school, graduating K, important school/sporting/life events. That kind of thing.
Hoping they'll appreciate it at some point.
I need to pull mine out ... I've not done it in a while ...

My class I'm 8th grade did a retreat thing and part of it was our parents had to write us a letter. It was pretty awesome reading what my parents had to say, since I think a lot of us don't say everything we want to all the time. It was emotional, in a good way, and I was reminded of how cool it was today and got excited about my son having that on a larger scale.
I kept mine. Some really heartfelt thoughts in the letters, and it was pretty emotional since we received them not long before students moved away for college.

My wife tries to get me to do this in a blog when mine was first born. I have to admit I thought the idea was hokey and declined.
I'm kind of coming around to a hardbound version, though, especially since he is older now.

My wife got me a nice leather journal to write to my kids... I used it for a workout log. She's just happy I used it.
How did I miss this?

Sounds like an awesome idea and something I would do if/when I have kids. I already keep a daily journal. I write about things I see, how I am feeling that day, what is going on around me, what my plans are.

I do this for both my kids they are 2 and 3 months. but i only do it from an outdoors perspective. i wright down every hunting trip, fishing trip, or anything outdoors. Not only is it good for them ,but i can look back to some good stories. I also include major events in the familys life. i think its pretty cool . cause you never know....

Yea we did, mostly just what we can what we can see/ feel, wife put how she was feeling/ what the dr has been saying. I actually pulled it out the other day I couldnt remember where I put the extra stuff for the crib, I remembered writing in the journal after I finished putting it up, sure enough I had a note to myself on where I put the hardware.
