Because the NYT knows that 95% of its readers have never heard of these names. Better for the NYT to define these characters and hold Rand guilty by association than have them defined by a objective media organization. The NYT also knows once they are defined by the NYT their readers will be too lazy or won't care to investigate those names further.

It's a smear piece.
