Why do we continue to do business with Pakistan?

Pakistan is without question our worst ally. The government and people of that country would willingly slit our throats in the night if they could get away with it. Any intelligence we give them, you can just about be assured that they're giving it to our enemies.
Honestly, after the Osama incident, we should have shut down relations and trade with them completely. Osama was living in their version of West Point and on the same fricking street as their version of General Petreius. There is no fricking way they didn't know he was hiding out there. There is a reason why Obama didn't choose to tell the Pakistanis about taking Osama Bin Laden, since they would have likely tipped him off. If Obama had any balls, instead of sucking Pakistani balls when they killed Osama, he would have told them to go frick themselves and good luck feeding their poor when the next quake comes around.
I really don't see any reason why we haven't cut them off like Cuba. I can't think of a worse ally America has had than these assholes, and they've really betrayed us. Anyone else think we should cut off relations with them?

The India Pakistan conflict is arguably the HOTTEST spot on the globe. You know-nukes? We have purchased calm. For now. Seems prudent faced with the options however distasteful it is.

frick it. Take India's side. They're much more promising, and aren't bunch of treacherous fricks. If Pakistan invades India, we take the Indian's side and frick over Pakistan.

Do you really think we are "engaged" with Pakistan because of India?
Anyway nukes have probably stabilized their relationship.

We sided with Pakistan because India stayed non-aligned during the Cold War (and had tons of cultural / political exchange with USSR). Meanwhile, Pakistan served as a crucial ally in the fight against godless communism. Even if that meant supporting evil people like Zia Ul Haq. Also, Nixon and Kissinger really disliked Indira Gandi on a personal level.
And lol at anyone criticizing Obama for his Pakistan policy. Bush and cronies coddled Pakistan for nearly a decade while being played for fools, culminating with ISI treachery along the AfPak border and the horrific terror attack on Mumbai which targeted Americans. Obama called Pakistan out multiple times during debates in 2008 and was chastised for it by his opponents as sounding politically naive.

I don't pretend to have insight but my guess would be it gives us access to intelligence that would be more difficult to obtain if we did not have "ally" as an excuse for the exchange of information and overt territorial trespassing on their territory without risk of war. We'd probably like to have N. Korea as an "ally" also but that would be too over the top. It might be analogous to why we remain in the United Nations; keep your friends close and your enemies even closer.

I agree that was the basis for our relationship during the cold war. I was writing about today not 20 - 50 years ago.

Yea, but that history still impacts our relationships with the two countries. US people have been setting up shop in Islamabad for decades. Business, politics, military, etc.
On the other hand, before India's economy opened up in the early 90's, It was very much an unknown. Huge country but our ties were tenuous. Even today, they haven't been helped by India's natural tendency to be somewhat aloof and odd internationally. After Pakistan's shown itself repeatedly to be a failing state, we've started shifting slowly towards a more neutral stance, which imo will probably eventually become pro-India. Who knows though.

This is pretty easy, as bad as Pakistan is as an ally, it would be much much much worse if they were our enemy. Can you imagine a radical Islamic country near India, China, and the Middle East with nuclear weapons? This is why we put up with all the shite from Pakistan.

Pakistan is next door to Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is the 4 squares in the middle of the chessboard.

In some ways the Saudis are worse but there's reason to think the royal family would like to be more pro-West but their circumstances don't allow it.
The Pakistanis are allies only in official State Dept. speak. I certainly hope that the powers that be see them more clearly off the record. Its possible, even likely, that we could find potential allies among the western educated military class but the shortterm benefits of a coup have to be weighed against the eventual swingback of the pendulum. (Iran 1953-now.)
There's another "ally" that comes to mind that has fricked us constantly for 60 years, stolen our most dangerous secrets, sold our advanced weapons tech to the Chinese, even murdered our sailors, but many on this board would argue them as our greatest ally and a linchpin of our security and stability.

Yes, but the Saudis are loyal to the almighty dollar, and thus won't slit our throats in our sleep because its not in their best interests. The Pakistanis don't give a frick about money and simply want to see us die.

Pakistan captured & turned over the man who masterminded the 9-11 attacks & it's foolish to believe the government knew he was in that house.

US and India have a big naval exercise coming up, FWIW.

Absolute bullshite. How does he live in the biggest military intelligence zone in the country without them knowing he is there? You would be not only incredibly naive to believe it, but stupid to believe them. If they didn't know he was there, they are without question the single dumbest nation on the planet. I choose to believe that they have basic reasoning skills, so they knew he was there. If you say they didn't , then they are the single most incompetent and dumbest group on the planet. There is a reason we didn't tell them we were going to invade them to kill off a few people.

Not only should we cut off Pakistan, but we should also cut off Saudi Arabia and Israel while we're at it. However, I don't by for one minute that the upper levels of the Pakistani government knew where Osama bin Laden was. There's no way it could have been kept a secret for so long if they did know, and our surveillance of the communication between the generals immediately following the raid proves that they didn't know.

He was in their version of West Point in a mansion doing highly suspicious behavior. Either accusation isn't good: They were either the stupidest mother frickers who have ever run an agency, or they knew who was living there.

Because CIA led them to the house he was in and allowed the Paks to kick the door in. CIA didn't even share the lead that pinpointed KSM with any Pakistani operatives because they would have leaked it.
Yeah, thanks alot Pakistan
