Rap has never become "hip hop." There is a difference in the two.

Never thought hip hop would take me this far

I have heard (not sure if true) that hip hop is a way of culture, made up of three parts: rapping (MC'ing) , turntable (production), and break dancing. Maybe graffiti instead of break dancing? Once again I am not sure just passing along something I heard.

I can't say "hip hop" without feeling ridiculous. It makes me think of Easter.

It's all of the above.
I remember the 80s when hip hop was on the rise. My dad was a big Kool Moe Dee fan and he would play this song while getting ready for work through his boom box which looked something like this:
You had to have one of those during the hip hop era
Hip hop was dressing in the gear, DJing, freestyle battle rapping, graffiti, break dancing and just having a good time without violence from 1979 to about the mid 90s.
Rap is just a genre of music with different styles such as hip hop, gangsta, conscience etc.

Wow. Now I feel old. I remember taping the Wild Wild West video on the encore showing of Yo! MTV raps back in the day.

I remember this dance well.
I dig rap. I don't dig hip hop.
I used to have a cheap personalized license plate on the front of my Toyota SR5 that read "I ain't No Joke". I was cool.

I'm sure there are different opinions. To me, rap is more of the old school "Two turntables and a microphone". I grew up on Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh, DMC, Cool J. That's rap music to me. Story Telling.
Hip Hop is wearing your pants down below your arse. Whack arse teeny bopper shite.
I was into it until about the end of the Cash Money/Mystikal/No Limit era. After that, frick it.
I still get down with Eminen. I consider him the best lyricist of all time.

G Money--You are spot on. I DJ'd back in a day at a few clubs. Today's shite is all recycled, tired shite.
