If you want the best, get something with Gore Tex

This is simply not true anymore. Gore Tex is no better or worse than Patagonia's H2NO, TNF's HyVent or any of the others. In fact, it's the exact same thing, but you will pay more for the Gore Tex label. The only waterproof breathable membrane that is truly superior is eVent because it can still breathe while wet, where the others can't.

Having used H2NO and HyVent extensively, I'm much more impressed with GoreTex Pro shell than either.

When paying for Arcteryx and Mammut you're paying both for better quality control (at least over Marmot, MH and TNF, if not Patagonia) and generally a better fit and finish, in addition to the GT. Now, there have been revisions that supposedly better compare to activeshell or pro shell (Dry Q Elite comes to mind) but I don't know about them, and they're not cheap.

The idea that nobody is using Gore Tex anymore, which I hear frequently from detractors, is odd to me. eVent is certainly excellent, but Patagonia didn't restore its very broken relationship with GT for no reason.

eVent is good, but from what I've read, NeoShell is the best, most breathable membrane available right now. And Westcomb > (most) Arc'teryx since Arc'teryx moved much of its manufacturing out of Canada.
