It means they are invited by LSU coaches to come be part of the team as a walk on, if they pan out and stick with it they can end up like a Conner Neighbors and get put on schollie at some point down the road.
Mark Laird was a preferred walk on for football. Was set to report for the summer and played in a baseball tourney at the Box and was offered a schollie to play baseball instead.
A lot of these guys get small school offers from LA schools but turn that down to come suit up for LSU.

Not to mention he's a pretty smart kid so tops will help a lot. Why scholarship a kid who would be going for free or almost free anyway. With preferred walk on status he'll get athlete benefits anyway, so it's basically an 86th ticket.
If there's one thing I've come to know about him it's that the kid gets after it. Played most of this year pretty injured, and when the nose guard tore his ACL he played both ways and never let up. It was as hard as I've seen a high school kid pushed.
