I realize this but why take up an HDMI for it. Fiber optics also work better. Also, if he's going to run a gaming console to it and wants to use surround it ain't gonna happen with HDMI.

This...I use all inputs into the TV and then one Fiber out to the receiver..

Tha hell are you talking about? HDMI goes from the cable box to receiver. Receiver breaks out the audio and sends the video to your TV via the HDMI out. HDMI doesn't support surround sound? News to me. The receiver will send a better audio signal than the tv will. I feel like I am taking crazy pills.
