I realize this but why take up an HDMI for it. Fiber optics also work better. Also, if he's going to run a gaming console to it and wants to use surround it ain't gonna happen with HDMI.

Correct..But you're going into a "switch" essentially and then hoping for the best signal out, when you could just go straight to the source.
