Could DirecTV dispute signal the beginning of the end for Weather Channel?

The weather channel was just blacked out in the last few days on Directv in a contract dispute over subscriber fees.
Directv doesn't seem to be worried one bit about losing the channel. TWC claims they are a life saving resource suring severe weather.
It seems like most people are fed up with the garbage reality programming on TWC. Not to mention, with something like over 50% of the country having smart phones, a fee-based weather channel seems like it could be a dying business model.
What say you? (I think people will find other, probably better alternatives and TWC will be fricked.)

I only tune into TWC during hurricanes.

I haven't watched them in years. In fact, when a major storm comes through I'd much watch the local people as they have a better sense of the area and have better information.
I would agree with Directv if they called their bluff.

TWC is useless
If there is an emergency weather situation, all of your local networks will have more reliable and relevant information.

I think all these channel disputes are the first battle in the true war. The merger of internet and tv to the point the Directv's disappear. I live in the middle of nowhere in north Alabama and I have digital IP TV through my rural telephone co-op (along with 70 mbps internet)

Pretty much. They make everything seem like the end of the world. "Killer thunderstorm claimed the life of a man passed out in a ditch!"

Is the weather channel even about weather these days? I haven't watched it in at least 5+yrs and every time I go to their website to check something really quick, there are news stories about god knows what.... Seems more like a tabloid news agency from their homepage these days.

This happens throughout the year as contracts come to a close. Local stations get blacked out, cable channels get blacked out... It's all a part of the bargaining process.
The Weather Channel may get bought out, but they won't be going out of business.

Agreed.
There's a reason why TWC tried to go the route of the History channel, TLC, and A&E.
They at least tried to make their dumb-shite shows involve the weather.
But in the end, people won't want to pay money to watch what they can easily find on the internet. Want a reality show about a redneck family from Louisiana? I'm willing to bet that within the decade, you'll have a host of choices to choose from on the internet.

People are still going to want the ease of just turning on their TV and having programming running like water from a tap. The web won't replace cable/broadcast until it's as simple as turning on your TV and the programming starts automatically.

Ok. It's still headed that way.

I say after the Braves got what they wanted from Cobb County TWC went public with their demands to the county to subsidize them to keep the TWC HQ in Cobb. Frankly, I could care less if TWC moves or not, or if viewers choose to watch them. I got tired of their manufactured melodrama and making big cabbage off people getting hammered into oblivion by various weather driven events years ago. CNN is not much different in that regard, just a broader spectrum of coverage.

I'll take Rob Robin for the replacement

The final straw for me with TWC was when they started assigning names to winter storms. I think they over-stepped with that and they are arrogant enough to expect the rest of the weather services to follow their lead. Oh and....I despise Al Roker. I won't miss them one bit.

Theyve already replaced twc with weather nation, which is actual coverage of the weather. I dont see them coming back to directv now, which is fine with me
