Who uses Melatonin?

I know several of you do, as I've seen it suggested for use here before.
I've been using a product for the last 3 months that contains in a serving 5mg of melatonin and 3mg total of GABA and Valerian Root.
My questions are, I've seen a few articles saying that melatonin triggers cortisol? Does anyone know this to be true or have you experienced weight gain while using it?
I've also read you only need to use 1mg, 90 minutes before bed. And that you shouldn't need to use it longer than 2 weeks or else your sleep issues may have some other root other than your body not producing enough melatonin.
How much, when, how long have you all been using it?
Not sure if age/size matters for use?

I take about 10mg a night for over a year and no weight gain.

never experienced weight gain and I've taken it for years. it's a natural hormone for sleep.

Read the online mayo clinic and webMD articles about it. It's more often recommended for temporary sleep problems (e.g., working weird hours).
If you're using it, 3mg or higher is not recommended.
Most Dr's recommend relaxation techniques or if reading helps you sleep, etc..
My problem is waking up in the middle of the night and failing to go back to sleep. I tried melatonin and it did no good there.

How much do you take, and how long before bed.

I've been using it for years...it works like a charm in helping me fall asleep. It hasn't led to any weight loss or gain. I'm 6'2, 185, 8"

I used to take 3mg or cut them in half to take 1.5mg. Last time at CVS all they had were 5mgs so I take those now. I don't think it really matters to be honest

5mgs after I brush my teeth. I get in bed, read some stuff for a bit, then fall asleep when I get tired

I'm not sure on the mg, but I took a half one night and I had to use a crowbar to pry myself out of bed the next morning. If I'm having trouble sleeping now, I'll nibble on a melatonin tablet. One tablet lasts me like 20 times.

Well, it seemed to help a little, but not as much now. Like I said, I've been taking it, pretty consistently, for 3 months. A 5mg dose.
I have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. And even when I do sleep, apparently it's not restful because I'm always tired and my husband says I toss and turn and once he even saw me sit straight up in the bed.

I take it on and off.. I've only ever used the 500 mcg or 1 mg dosages. Never more than that.
I've never experienced any side effects.

I've taken it before, not in a while, though. It did help me fall asleep, although I'd only sleep about 5 hours, then wake up feeling kind of out of it for a while. And it wasn't foolproof. If I was really wired about something, or stressed out, it didn't work. YMMV.

What are these articles you speak of? Reputable medical sites?
My dr recommended me melatonin & I don't think he would have if that were the case
Unfortunately it does absolutely nothing for me

I have an virtually unlimited supply of Valium. I just use that.

Probably not.
I just like to read a bunch of different things. One was from Dr. Oz. I've mostly only seen positive things, just wanted to address the few "negative" things I've seen, and see if there was a more effective dosage, time for me to take it. It's not helping that much any more. So I may just need to find something else.
I've also been having trouble with night sweats here recently, probably around the time I really noticed the sleep issues.
