The difference between Payton and Harbaugh was their predecessor. Mike Singletary was a defensive minded coach and he build his team Defense heavy. Jim can in and brought his offense to the fore while keeping that Defense. I.E perfect storm.
Payton had to rebuild his team from scratch and most of the players he inherited initially did not one to play outside of Joe Horn, Deuce and Gleason. The Saint rosters were a dumpster fire as the old guard had that mentality of losing in new orleans. You can't build around that, even Barry Sander quits the lion because he couldn't take losing anymore.
So..Payton is better. I would like to see Harbaugh go to Jacksonville and turn them into a powerhouse inside of a year.
John Fox however, I gotta give the man credit where credit is due, he did an amazing job at Miami.

Until recently, I would have said no. Right now though, I have to give him the edge. Too many times this year, I saw Payton outthink himself.
He did have some talent when he came to SF but Stanford was a mess when he took over there. They were coming off of a 1 - 11 season in 2006 and he lead them into the Coliseum and beat USC as a 41 point underdog the next season. That alone will always get him some respect from me.
