Is it just my lease or has this year been a bumper crop of blackbirds
Posted on 1/12/14 at 5:11 pm to hardhead
naw, I have seen a ton of them...migrating down with this cold weather, I suppose...

Just the robins are thick here.

They haven't poisoned them yet, apparently. They used to assess farmers 100 bucks or so, I seem to remember.

Been seeing some huge flocks here.
But what amazes me is the amount of geese I've been seeing. Huge flocks, some very close to major roads. Thousands upon thousands of geese.
Last weekend they were so noisy they woke me up Saturday morning.
I guess those geese realize no one is gonna sneak up on them.

There isn't enough meat to bother with besides the breast.

They can cause serious damage to a pile of corn!

Not all blackbirds are good. The little short ones are. Red wings and grackles are not good

just what i call the "true" blackbirds - big and pure black. red wings and grackles ...nope. actually robins are good also, but illegal to shoot.

What exactly do you call a "blackbird"?
There's some nasty shite called "blackbird" that I'd never touch.

I'm assuming he's talking about european starlings ........ you know, "eating blackbird pie".....

Common Grackle is my favorite of the "blackbirds". I whole pick. The legs and back are good.

That's all my grand pa had me shoot. Called them rice birds. Put them in jambalaya or cook them down and made a gravy.

The coonasses I hunt with call them chalks, choks, or charks...some shite like that. I call em little black birds. They aren't starlings. They may be brown headed cowbirds, I really haven't shot em since I was like 12. I do know em when I see em.
