I seem to have dropped mine one too many times and need to recover what is on it. It only clicks when I plug it in. The computer does not recognize anything is plugged in. Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

You are going to have to send it somewhere and pay $$$$$$
DriveSavers for example.
Or Seagate Data Recovery

If it is clicking, something in the drive is physically broken.
The last one we sent to DriveSavers costs hte company $1,800, but we got every single file back.

It's personal pictures and such. I won't pay that until I reach OT baller status. Could I not take it apart and tinker myself?

You can but you would more than likely just make it worse. Those things are handled in clean rooms.

They don't call it the click of death for nothing.

There is a way u can do it using Ubuntu from a thumb drive. Ive done it a few times on dying and dead hdds. Google it.

This.
If it's just a question of the drive head no longer working but the platters are fine, you may not have to pay more than seven or eight hundred and it sounds like that might be the case here.
Next time back up your stuff ...

If he does what I said he won't have to pay shite. This seriously will work on dead drives even if they are clicking. I've done it as have a few other people I know

But if he wants to send it to me I will gladly do it for half of the $700 - $800 you are quoting him

I wonder if you were able to take it out of the external case and put it in your computer, then use SprinRite to recover everything?

I'm OC about backing files up. Every hard drive I have has an identical backup. It's a compulsion I'm glad I have.

No, no, no. Not for a clicking drive. You don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Oh, I know. But he doesn't sound technically inclined enough to pull it off. If he has hardware failure he'll have to replace the actuator and/or drive head, or mount the platters in a new drive. If you know what you're doing this can be done with latex gloves inside a big freezer bag. Both the new and old drive will not be usable for long since you aren't in a true clean room but it'll probably work long enough to get the data back.
The Ubuntu thumb drive trick doesn't seem like it'll work with broken hardware though. If the hardware doesn't work Ubuntu won't spin the platters or move the drive head for you.
ETA: In fact, one of your links specifically states it won't work with dead hardware.

Your hosed unless you want to spend the money. Suggest using two back up drives or 1 drive and cloud storage in the future.

Yes I do because I have done it on a clicking drive. Two actually but go ahead and stick to your guns in believing I am wrong without trying it.
I know why a drive is clicking and all that jazz but trying Ubuntu and hoping it works is better than the other options.

I took apart a few of these. Fwiw, they are typically a standard hdd with a controller board ins4ide a plastic shell. Mine clearly had a burned out part on the hdd itself,so i was out of luck. If you didnt pay a lot, it'lljust be a standard hdd inside.
