Forgive my stupidity

My hot water heater seems like it has a constant flame (not the pilot light). How often should it kick off after showers, dishwasher runs, etc. Again, I know the pilot light is constantly on, but this is the actual flame that heats the water.
TIA

Does it have a thermostat? What is it set to?
How big of a tank?
How many things running simultaneously?
Have you noticed a change in your bill?
Why is it heating the hot water?

Sounds like you need a new thermostat. I should automatically reduce flame when the water is heated to the proper temperature.

guess that depends on where it is....if its in a cold attic or garage, probably. but if its in a warm house, that seems odd. just my 2 cents.

It's in my cold as frick attic

If it is a hot water heater, then you are heating water that is already hot. Why do you need it?

Well don't fix it in your cold as frick attic and burn your house down. I promise your attic won't be cold anymore.

A smaller tank with colder external temperatures (particularly at the level of the incoming water main) and a high-set thermostat could be at least reasonable as a cause if he doesn't have a pronounced 'jump' in his bill or steady rise in use (not because of price of the gas but because of a failing thermostat that is 'always kicked on'), no?

Same problem. Guy came out today and is replacing the thermostat and dip stick

It's there because your water is too cold.
Ur welcomed.

But it should heat the water to my specified settings and then eventually kick off, no?

You said it's a hot water heater, not a cold water heater. Are you certain you have the right kind?

I've never heard of a cold water heater....

Its called a water heater not a hot water heater.
If it is already hot it does not need heating.
Have new thermostat installed and put a good insulating blanket around tank.

I think he's being a dick. Wants you to refer to it as a water heater.
I could be wrong.
