re: 46 or 50" TV? Leaning toward the 46.

As everyone else has said, go with the 50. We had the same choice to make couple years ago when deciding. Went with the 50 and at first said it was huge, now looks avg. If the TV is going to be 10 ft back or further from viewing distance you will be fine. And pixels, sharpness or clarity don't make any difference between the sizes if its the same model.

Here's my setup. The tube TV is great, but a bit small. The blue couch now directly faces the fireplace and the two chairs are facing the TV.

My old arse parents have a giant TV too...Kind of my point. It looks like they can't see shite, so they bought a huge TV. I don't wear or need glasses.

I have perfect vision, as does my wife. But having a giant arse home theater is awesome.

One thing I learned a long time ago about picking a tv: choose the size you want, and then get the next size up.

After seeing your living room, you may wanna stick with LED or LCD. Plasmas are best for dark rooms, they do terrible with glare.

This is true. I have to replace my Plasma because it went out and I will go with LED/LCD because of the brightness.

We do live in Gay St Louis.

From that pic the 50 looks like it would do just fine.

just make damn sure you get a "smart" tv. you wont regret it!

The size of a TV needed is determined by how far away you sit when viewing it. Most people tend to buy too large and sacrifice picture quality, though very minimal.

Get the 50". You won't regret going larger.
Now the other thing you mentioned about the sofa not directly facing the tv could be a reason to go plasma. The plasma won't have off-axis color distortion like a LCD tv will (and yes LED is still LCD. there are no pure LED tv's yet in your price range). go to a store and try to stand off to the side where your sofa is and see if you notice color changing on the tv. If you see it get the plasma.

Adding a roku or apple tv will accomplish the same thing but give more options

I had a small 20 inch LCD that someone just gave me when they were moving. So I got a mount and decided to put it up high in my home office. Problem is you can't see it from the angle at my desk, the screen is almost entirely blacked out.

Or a Blue ray that is smart.

50, 46 is small. I know this because I have a 46 in the bedroom and a 55 in the den and a 60 in the living room. The 46 used to be in the living room. If the room you are putting it in is even remotely big, 46 is too small.

In that room, you need at least 50"
From my experience, you will get used to the size very quickly and it will seem normal
