Top 10 NFL playoff QB's, the way we should look at it

In response to the incessant jabbing that Manning takes on message boards for going 9-11 in the playoffs (if you need it explained to you why that's better than say, Kurt Warner's 9-4, then you're an idiot who should exit this thread and find one about what Skip Bayless said yesterday), I tallied down some numbers the way we should see them.
Because the NFL gives playoff byes, sometimes the better teams tally down fewer wins in proportion to their success. For example, if Denver were to beat Indianapolis in the AFC Championship game and lose in the Super Bowl, both Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck will have 2-1 playoff records for this season, though it is undeniable that Manning was the more successful one by virtue of advancing further. What I'm saying is that a playoff bye is essentially the exact same as a wild card round win, so I'm counting it as such for this post.
Making it to the playoffs: 1 point
Making it to the divisional round: 1 point
Making it to the conference championship round: 1 point
Making it to the Super Bowl: 1 point
Winning the Super Bowl - 1 point
Here's your top ten playoff quarterbacks of all time (current playoff situations are counted):
QB - Playoff app - Divisional app - Conf ch'ship app - SB app - SB wins - total
1. Tom Brady - 11 10 7 5 3 - 36
2. Joe Montana - 11 9 7 4 4 - 35
3. Terry Bradshaw - 9 8 6 4 4 - 31
3. John Elway - 10 8 6 5 2 - 31
5. Brett Favre - 12 9 5 2 1 - 29
6. Peyton Manning - 13 9 3 2 1 - 28
7. Roger Staubach - 7 7 7 4 2 - 27
8. Troy Aikman - 8 6 4 3 3 - 24
8. Jim Kelly - 8 7 5 4 0 - 24
10. Dan Marino - 10 8 3 1 0 - 22
Brady is #1, and I doubt anybody passes him. If Denver were to win the Super Bowl this year, Manning is tied at #3.

Making it to the playoffs, making it to the Super Bowl, and winning the Super Bowl being weighted the same is dumb.

This is a decent attempt, but still stupid

If you ain't first, you're last.

quote:I agree, and that's the whole point of this. Losing in the wild card round counts for 1. Losing in the Super Bowl adds up to 4. Winning the Super Bowl adds up to 5. When somebody says Manning is 9-11 in the playoffs, they're giving all those things the exact same weight, and it's dumb.

Yeah, how does just making the playoffs make you a great playoff QB?

I think it's a good point

Just 1 more point for winning vs losing the Super Bowl is a slanted view IMO.

quote:Fair point, but it isn't anywhere near as slanted as if someone were to say that, for example, Kurt Warner's 9-4 playoff record is better than Peyton Manning's 9-11 playoff record. Losing in the playoffs 7 times is better than sitting at home 7 Januarys.
Just 1 more point for winning vs losing the Super Bowl is a slanted view IMO.

This is almost as dumb as ranking QBs by Super Bowl wins.
The QBs that had better teams/defenses are ranked high. Ground breaking information.

Honestly IMO this is interesting and pretty well done.
You'll still get shredded to pieces by others though.

Well, there is nothing inherently wrong with the post. I only skimmed it, but it looks he is not making any inferences. Just rewarding the teams of qbs who managed to earn a bye. However, it does not change my view on anything of course.

The entire premise is ranking QBs by wins or losses with no consideration to actual performance. It's terrible
Posted on 12/31/13 at 12:04 am to Vicks Kennel Club
quote:This also helps quarterbacks from a generation ago who only played in eras of one or no wild card rounds, meaning fewer mathematical possibilities for postseason games played. This puts Bradshaw ahead of Favre and Staubach ahead of Kelly&Aikman, for example.

I feel like earning a bye week in the playoffs should get some players like Peyton Manning more praise. That's pretty much like earning a win during the first round of the playoffs.
