I'm pretty sure he gets 3 from arky, and the other 2 is from arky to pay off his release to Wisconsin

This. He's gotta pay Wisconsin for leaving them

I don't follow CFB very closely. What did they do to deserve that kind of money?

Jones doesn't make 4.8M. Or, at least Tennessee isn't paying him 4.8M. He makes 3M.

I would be surprised if any current BCS school would let a NC winning coach go for the 4-5 mil range

even super small schools like Wake Forest?

I think you are jaded by the fact the SEC coaches have won the title. Is there any non SEC coach that has won the national champions and is still at their school?

Here's the question....how many schools in the country COULD AND WOULD pay him 4-5mm a year to be their long term coach.

There are maybe 20 programs that could afford that much and at least half already have a coach they wouldn't get rid of. His # is closer than yours.

quote:

1. Nick Saban, Alabama – $5,545,852 3. Bret Bielema, Arkansas – $5,158,863 4. Butch Jones, Tennessee — $4,860,000 7. Les Miles, LSU – $4,459,363

You think Bama and LSU would fire their head coaches for this guy? Also, Arkansas wouldn't fire Bielema yet and Tennessee may not even be ready to move on yet.

You aren't understanding the question. In his scenario the coach is already at the school.

Oh yes I guess I didn't.....in that case he is 100% correct and it should be obvious that like 50 schools would KEEP a coach like that for 4-5 mil a year.

I say there's 20-25 schools that would write that check....

Right this second, I would say that your count is high.

In a year or two, you will be accurate, IMO. 4M+ is nothing to sneeze at.

He says there's maybe 3-4 including UT, Bama, tOSU, and maybe ND or USC.

He's definitely low.

ETA: I misread your question. Your are correct. If the team writing the check is the team that is trying to keep the coach, then your estimate is accurate, IMO.

I think there are a lot of teams who would pay more to keep their coach than they would to bring someone else in.
