ZMett's big arm vs AJ's athleticism

Mett did great things with his arm, the best passer on campus since the JaMarcus/Rohan Davey years but his lack of mobility killed us too often.
We'll get a glimpse of AJ's arm come Jan 1 I hope, please Les don't be conservative in this game, and hopefully his mobility offsets the lack of sheer arm strength Mett brought to the table.
With our still suspect OL pass blocking, AJ should be the right guy especially with a Fornette to hand off to at any given time.

I think its a non subject. AJ's wheels are a big plus obviously. But even as strong as metts arm is, I don't think they are giving up anything with AJ. Sure mett has
a stronger arm, but I don't think its a difference maker in what plays are called.

Disagree and I think we'll see the difference in Tampa unless Les calls it too close to the vest.
When Mett went back to pass, that was it, he either threw or got sacked. When AJ goes back to pass, it opens up options to where he can throw the pass play called or take off in needed.
The 'if needed' part is what I'm most worried about though, that he abandons the pass option too early.

Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly. Yes we gain alot with AJ's wheels. Will be a big advantage and tool for the
Offense. At the same time, yes Mett has a bigger arm but iI don't see it being a big enough difference that the offense will have to be tweaked.

I hope and pray for AJ to do very well but people vastly underestimate the talents of the Mettsiah. Next year will be a definite step back in the passing game.

ya think?
we're going from a 5th yr senior who had a yr of starting experience to a true soph who'll have 1 start under his belt, and likely losing 2 WRs who caught the vast majority of said 5th yr senior's passes.

Don't fret over this, AJ is a pass first kind of guy. He won't take off unless it's required.
We are going to be explosive. Very, very explosive.

Arm strength is way over rated in my opinion. Give me a mobile qb, that throws an accurate 10 to 15 yd pass, and doesn't make bad decisions. Mauck and Flynn were perfect examples of that type of qb. Neither were as mobile as AJ, but both were way more mobile than Mett. Both took us to NCs. Rohan, JR, and Mett did not.

The 17 yard out from the far hash will not be executed without an INT in this game. Mett could make that throw every time. I don't think AJ has the strength to do it, but his timing in throwing the pass can make up for that.

I agree.. With a mobile qb there are so many things you can do out the same formations. Every title game LSU has been in the qb was mobile.

Brains! Matt Mauck said something in an interview that I will never forget. He said his job wasn't to try and win the game single handed but to get the ball into the hands of the playmakers. LSU always has a wealth of playmakers. I want to see if AJ has the brains. It's what a qb has between the ears that wins games. Don't turn the ball over and get the ball to the playmakers and you don't need a cannon of an arm to do either.

Jennings arm will clearly determine what pass plays are called. And I would imagine that there are some throws that Zach made look easy that Jennings won't be able to make.

Haven't seen enough of Jennings to know just how good he is or will be, but if he can make at least 90% of the passes Mett made this season along with being able to run the ball, they will be in good shape, and i believe CC will have him ready.

Flynn and Mauck had a lower completion %, less yards, and a lower passer rating than Russell, Mettenberger, and Davey. Let's look at how often they threw INTs:
Matt Mauck - every 29 passes (3.4 %)
Rohan Davey - every 32 passes (3.1%)
Matt Flynn - every 34 passes (3.0%)
JaMarcus Russell - every 38 passes (2.6%)
Zach Mettenberger - every 44 passes (2.3%)
huh? what's that? Mauck and Flynn were both more likely to throw INTs than Russell and Mettenberger, despite throwing far less passes (Russell had 797 attempts, Mett had 659 attempts, Mauck had 529 attempts, Flynn had 437 attempts).
JaMarcus Russell, Zach Mettenberger, and Rohan Davey were far superior to Matt Flynn and Matt Mauck.
You are an idiot.

the what ifs will drive you off the cliff. Mett behind an OL that gives you time to make reads and get the ball to landry, odell, or other open receiver was virtually unstoppable, our problem pocket collapsed blitz not picked up and Mett just didn't have the physical ability to avoid it. Think in the pros he will learn to step up in the pocket or just throw the ball away. AJ open canvas will need to see what gets painted on it.

he said neither took LSU to national titles...how is he the idiot? Russell had the below players to distribute the ball to:
Bowe, Doucet, Buster Davis, Skyler Green, LaFell at WR
Zinger & Jones at TE
Broussard, Vincent, Addai at RB
Whitworth, Niswanger, Helms, Livings, and Arnold blocking up front.
How he didn't win every game that year still blows my mind...especially to Tenn. and the throwaway Clausen...WTF.

Wrong. Play calling in an offensive scheme has a lot to do with personnel on the field.
