Can someone explain the strategic aspect of having dwarves in Erebor?

I seem to remember something to the effect (and the movies are alluding to it by the way Gandalf is pushing for their reinstatement) that it dramatically changed the strategic landscape of the war of the Ring even though the dwarves armies didn't participate in it.

I think the important thing was to kill Smaug before Sauron got his full power back.

The main purpose was to kill Smaug before he could side with Sauron and to establish a strong dwarven kingdom in the north. Both of which were achieved. The dwarves did some serious fighting during LOTR, they are mentioned several times in books, Along with the men of Dale and the defendants of Beorn.
