Christmas with Extended Family

What do you guys do. My family drew names for years among the adults - everyone bought for kids. This year they just decided to drop the whole buy for adults thing altogether. My brothers al have kids, I have kids, etc.
My wife's family, particularly my mother in law, has an unhealthy obsession with the material side of Xmas - and demands that everyone buy for everyone else. We end up buying for 12 adults when all is said and done. My wife and her siblings basically threw all they could at her this year to stop this and she cried and threw a childish fit.
Everyone I have asked does either a drawing of names or nothing for adults except for one side of my family. Anyone else have a similar deal?
I'm at the point where I really just want to plant everyone a tree in France or something.

We still draw names for siblings on one side and we get gifts for our parents.

Gifts for young kids only. No formal exchange, but I will bring a bottle of wine of some sort of foodstuffs. We all have enough crap and don't need anything more. I do slip my younger nephews $$.

This.
I think a lot of the gift giving we do in this country is wasteful.

On my in-laws side we all bring a $50 gift. Ages range from 25 - 80. Its a lot of fun. Once people start having kids though I would bring them separate little gifts.

Extended family on my side started doing dirty santa a few years ago with a $25-30 gift, but I'm never there to do it. It seems like more fun especially if you have a large extended family.

About 10 years ago it was kids only, then it went to secret santa (drawing names). We now do dirty santa among the kids and the adults $20-30 gift and its awesome...you've got families and couples and siblings conspiring against or with each other.

Ha yeah. This is the best part. I was able to be a part of ours for a few years, and those gifts were always the best. Everyone who was in on it would be patiently waiting for their gift to be picked.
