re: Is it really illegal to buy a pistol as a gift? UPDATE

Exactly. Sadly there's an unnecessary cause for concern to some salesmen when they hear that. It's ridiculous. If you can't tell the difference, you shouldn't have the responsibility of the job.

Look I know what you mean but your possible straw purchase is just gonna go down the street and buy a gun from someone else. It's very easy to ask a couple of basic questions and their answers almost every time will immediately give it away as a straw purchase or legal gifting.
I agree, I think the way they train is wrong but it is what it is. I only refused one sale where the guys buddy pointed out a gun and the guy immediately came to me and said he wanted it without asking to hold or see it. Otherwise like you say, people will just go somewhere else so you might as well make your commission/boost your sales. They need to put way more effort into training people that sell guns at these big retail stores.

It's not that you say "screw the law, they're gonna buy it somewhere else anyways." More that most salesmen are taught and trained to immediately refuse a sale with suspicion, rather than just ask a couple questions and figure it out. Doing the former is simply going to alienate a possible legal buyer.
And after you refuse to be reasonable with him, you can bet your arse he is going to go down the street and gladly give his money to someone else.

Along with telling all of his hunting buddies(and TigerDroppings) not to shop there because they don't know the law.

And this only gets you in trouble if you know, or have reason to believe the giftee is ineligible to purchase/possess a firearm.

I bought a box of bullets over there a few weeks ago.

If we all said "DON'T SPEND MONEY AT ____ GUNS" after a bad experience, there would be no firearms places in BR left to spend money
Every store has their idiots. Some more than others because some management actually tries to train their employees correctly. Our store had one of these "you're suspicious, frick you" salesman and he drove our manager nuts. Manager basically had to hover over him during sales just waiting to interrupt him if he got weird on a customer. Damn shame. Should've been canned from the get go
In all seriousness, if the above story about Bowies is factual, DO NOT SPEND MONEY AT BOWIES. It's ridiculous management couldn't at least hear the customer out and then kicked them out of the store over gifting a gun. Frick that shite

Chet was the initial salesman's name who refused to sell us the gun. Brian was the manager's name who helped us and corrected the salesman's mistake. He actually kind of chewed the guy out right in front of us, it was awesome.

Funny that you ended up getting the same gun. He liked the olive finish better but ended up getting it for her in black just to be safe.

You ever tried selling a bow? I can't find any store to buy it back. Brand new & never even been shot.
Posted on 12/6/13 at 3:06 pm to TXGunslinger10
I'm actually looking to start bowhunting. What is it?

Bought it for 300. I'd sell it to a fellow OBer for 200
