Had an A bolt in 300 wsm. HATED sighting it in. I used it when I hunted the long fields, but I actually took a decent 8 pt with that thing at less than 30 yards and it lodged in its opposite shoulder (WIN 180 gr bal silvertip). When I opened him up it looked like a mini suicide bomber slid down his windpipe into the chest cavity. Brutal.
eta: found another pic of one I really like the looks of...
I have that same gun in .300 win.

Thanks Tiger on the Hill! I can't say that I would change much about it.

FWIW: I "built" this for my wife.
Savage Axis .308 with custom muzzle break, 2 lb trigger job, Muddy girl camo dipped, conversion to single piece scope rail, and Nikon M-308 4x16x40 BDC scope.

Kinda late to the party and my perfect deer rifle will actually be a handgun (been more than 20 years since I killed a deer w/ a rifle). I've not yet started work on this project, but prolly will in next few years.
Primary usage: Box stands overlooking food plots w/ shooting lanes up to 225 yds long; box stand on very wide and long powerline w/ shots up to 200-250 yards.
Caliber: 284 Win
Stock: McMillian synthetic w/ sling studs and "Just Sling It" sling.
Barrel/action: Remington XP-100. Undecided on barrel make, but will prolly McGowen, Shilen or Douglas. Will be 16" long w/ a fairly heavy contour (0.9" diameter at muzzle).
Optics: Burris 3-12X handgun scope in Burris Signature Z Rings on top of Weaver one piece scope base.
Will look a lot like this XP, but will have heavier barrel contour.

Damnit boy! I want to get into that!

It's been a lot of fun, but has also been frustrating at times. It's kinda like bowhunting, albeit not as demanding as bowhunting, in that I've had to accept some limitations I wouldn't have w/ a rifle. For example, there have been, and will continue to be, some shots I just can't get off because it takes longer to get set for the shot w/ a scoped handgun than a rifle. Plus, I've had to be very creative sometimes finding a support/rest in stands for my gun; freehand shots are not an option for me.

was that the purple paintball gun that was posted a few months ago?

Seems like those things would have horrible recoil. How far are you confident shooting a deer with that thing?

As of right now I've only taken a doe with a pistol. I'd like for that to change though. That may be how I hunt for the next few years.

HaHa!! No slippage of your mind! Yes, in a prior post some mistook it for a "paint ball" gun.

I knew it looked familiar. looked through my photobucket to see if I could find the rainbow gun but I deleted it I guess

quote:Recoil is real, but it's manageable. Unlike rifles, when one of these guns recoil, it doesn't slap your face or jolt your shoulder; it recoils some backwards and the muzzle flips up. With the gun pictured, a 7-08, the muzzle flips about 45 deg or so. W/ a rifle action, 14-16" barrel, scope and rings/base, these guns are heavier than revolvers or semi-autos; the additional weight tames the recoil considerably. One gets accustomed to the recoil. Muzzle blast can be a problem, especially for shooters not wearing muffs.

quote:The deer in the pic was shot at 125 yds. The main factor w/ long shots is being able to get set up for the shot. On a handgun only antelope hunt I once killed a buck at 225 yds and a doe at 275 yds; both were one shot kills. I once hit a mule deer at 325 yds (unfortunately, it made a step as I shot, resulting in a gut shot; I sneaked up to it at 175 yds and put it down.) All those shots were made w/ a solid rest over a bipod, backpack, etc. Nowdays, most of my hunting is from tower stands. I rest the guns on a sand bag on the window sill or my back pack. This type of hunting is definitely challenging.
How far are you confident shooting a deer with that thing?

I bet so. That's a whole lot of juice in that short of a barrel.

I posted some before and after pics in a thread a few months ago, but the pics aren't' there now. Here's the before pic of "the rainbow gun":

Is that a regular 700 action?
Posted on 12/9/13 at 7:09 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
The single shot XP-100 w/ a grip in the center (like this one) is based of a modified Remington Model 600 action (carbine), itself a modified Model 700 action. The dogleg bolt is unique to the XP-100 and the Model 600. At one time, Remington made a rear grip XP-100R, the R standing for repeater as it had an internal magazine. The XP-100R used a Model 7 action.
