all the while giving themselves the easiest schedule and still failing to win out, just as they did in 2011 and 2012.

Top 4 is not mediocre. Top 8 might be.
I always preferred top 6.

The problem with six is that you have three teams remaining after the first round. There shouldn't be byes for anyone.

Jesus Christ.
No. They are, however, rewarded FOR MEDIOCRITY.
See their pathetic schedules the past three years, and consider what Mark Womack did for them this year in an attempt to hand them the SEC West title.
Compared to LSU, Auburn, and other SEC contenders, Bama's standard they have had to meet in order to make a title game have been mediocre, at best.
Mediocre team? No. Mediocre standards? Yes.
No, I don't feel like typing out their travesty of a schedule in 2011 or having to remind everyone they got by in 2012 without playing a top team from the East, while LSU played USC and UF.
I could go on and on...

I think they need to change to 6 and put in 5 conference champs (SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 12, ACC) and 1 at large. Top 2 get byes.
However many teams you want, fine. But no matter how much we talk about this, we can't have conference affiliation matter at all, ever. It's never been possible, and it will never be possible.

What's the problem with a bye for top 2? Those teams should be rewarded.

Yes. I remember Bama LOSING AT HOME in November to one of them in 2011, then making good on a mulligan that a vast majority of CFB teams would never dream of getting.
I remember them LOSING AT HOME in November in 2012 to a top 10 team, only to be rewarded the SECW crown because aTm and LSU both had to play tougher teams from the SEC East (by design). They were then rewarded with a title game against a Notre Dame team that would have been destroyed by probably close to 20 other CFB teams.
Same scenario next year, and we are talking about rewarding them again for playing a weaker schedule than the rest of the top SEC teams, along with LOSING AGAIN in November.

The problem is that the top two are nothing more than selections made by a committee. Too much chance of the wrong teams being rewarded.
Make it into the playoff and then play the games. No one should get a free advancement IMHO.

EZE, don't kill the messenger. I TOTALLY agree w/your premise of mediocre standards. Bama hasn't had to EARN it like they should. But, and this makes me sick to say, their team is still the best. BUT, i think that is changing over the next couple of years...

I get what you're saying and you have a point. It's just that I'm too happy right now to worry about next year.
Top4 does mean Bama has to lose twice which doesn't happen much. But top4 means LSU has a better shot too. would've been nice in 2006.

Many major programs are already shying away from tough OOC games anyway. Conference championships do not count now anyway as well, thanks to 2011.
The whole point of my OP is that, if there will be a final four, there HAS to be a level playing field somewhere. You can't have major "elite" programs like Bama playing these types of schedules and being rewarded for losing games and not even winning their division, much less their conference.

Yep, I'm certain 2014 will bring its own drama in due time.

2006 Michigan agrees with this statement

The national championship in football should not be to reward the "best team". If that were the case, we should have had a chance to play for it in 2001, 2006, etc.
It's to reward the team with the BEST SEASON. That's why Alabama, even though they were the better team, should not have been in the NCG in 2011 over Oklahoma State, who arguably had a better season.

if they arent worthy then it will be proven in the playoff format when they matchup against the best teams.

The bridge schedules are done. Take away the dumb permanent opponents and I think we're all happy

What are you talking about? Last night's loss has nothing to do with 2014.
Don't be happy Alabama lost, because of some hypothetical in 2014 when Alabama will have a different team with a different schedule?

Which I can accept. They are definitely a top 4 team. I think they beat Ohio State/Missouri/Auburn on neutral fields. I think Florida State is a push. But in the new system Florida State/Ohio State/Alabama and winner of SEC title makes a lot of sense for a playoff. You would have two undefeated and two one loss SEC teams. Nobody else really has a resume to compete against that. Baylor would be your next closest.
