Savage is making a great product at a great price point right now.

my boy has been shooting a Marlin youth model 7mm-08 since he was 10. Perfect gun for that age. Also, my wife has gotten back into hunting the last few years and told me she wanted a gun of her own. I bought her a Mossberg youth model 308. Both are very nice guns for the price. Both will group them at 100yds so that you can cover them with a quarter. I think they are both a little over 3 bills.
I didnt even know that Mossberg made rifles until I bought hers a few months ago.

Decided detachable mag
Go ahead and buy a spare mag now…….not that a young kid would EVER lose it or replace it! :bang head:
Congrats! You done good on the gun. He has a gun that should serve him well for a lifetime.

Can buy new stock and in box was a 50% off adult stock coupon.
Gonna paint the mag hot orange on the portions that will not be seen while it is in the gun. And gonna have a zippered pouch put on the sling to hold the mag.
Will likely add a muzzle brake to this one too. And may custom dip it or just paint it myself.
Got to sight it in and find that sweet round for it first. I'm thinking the Hornaday Lite SST

May want to see how well he can handle the recoil before getting the brake. The break will sure make it louder.
If you decide on the diy, you might consider Alumahyde II. I painted the action and barrel of an XP-100 w/ it and was pleased. Looking forward to seeing how well it holds up.

This is what i learned to shoot on as well as all of my brothers. That gun has killed dozens of deer in the 15e years that mydad has had it.

Didn't read all the thread. But I have a H and R 243. Shoots good but just soon get a bolt. Give them one bullet at a time if you want.

There are several other threads I remember seeing that all had some good information if you want to search and review. For my son we went with the Browning X bolt micro hunter in a 7mm-08. Basic 10x scope. The micro hunter is not a youth model per se but a shorter more compact rifle. My son is now 17 and 6'3" and he still shoots it and loves it. In fact when he decides he is hunting the "mattress flats" in the morning (sleeping in) I take it with me. Great shooting and accurate. Detachable mag and some other good safety features. We went with the wood stock mainly because I liked the wood stock but because of his age and use it has some "character" now so take that into consideration.
We looked at some youth models and I just thought he would grow out of them very fast. How old is your son/daughter? Regarding the caliber, I just liked the 7mm-08 slightly over the .243. You will hear both sides so you will have to decide ultimately. Regardless I am sure he/she will be thrilled with a new/first rifle. I remember giving Eric his and he was just plain stoked!
Good luck and let us know what you decide.

This is what my son has. We got it when he was 12 or 13. He is 20 now. It is all he hunts with and has never wanted another gun.
A friend of mine told him when first got it to shot them in the neck and he has done that on every deer he has killed-- 8 or 10 deer over the years--and every one fell in their tracks. One at almost 150 yards. We has a 3x9 nikon scope I believe.
The Browning X is an outstanding rifle and the 7mm-08 is a great whitetail round.
