Unless they back off these new hand check rules CBB will be a miserable viewing experience.
I'm watching BC-Providence and there is a whistle every 5 seconds for ticky tac shite

its going to be awful at the beginning of the season but im hopeful the players adjust quickly and the refs go easy on the whistle as the season progresses

The games I have watched have been bad. Too many whistles.

I think I read there were 50 fouls in the first 30 minutes of the Tulane exhibition last week.

I already hated how many fouls there were in college basketball. I'm going to watch for a few weeks and if it's as bad as it's rumored to be, I don't think I'm going to watch at all.

There was only about a 3 min period in first half of UK game that had a flow to it. It's pretty pitiful.

have y'all watched the NCAA Tourney the last few years?? The offensive pace was unbearable to watch, the perimeter play has gotten too physical....they had to do something to pick up the scoring, it will work itself out!!

Teams will adjust as the season moves along. Hopefully by February and March we'll see a solid flow.

There were 52 fouls called in the UK game tonight. UK shot 48 FT's. Good luck beating any team that gets to the stripe 48 times a game.

Gonna be interesting to see how many teams change the way they play man vs how many shift to an increase in zone.
The game is about to change significantly.

I agree. It will be very interesting to see what Pitino does with Louisville. He's always taught a very physical defense. That could really hurt them this season and they aren't really deep.

We'll get back to 80's basketball after players adjust.

I don't think it was all the contact that caused the lack of scoring the past few years. These guys today have no fundamentals. They can't shoot.

Jay Bilas had some good commentary on the rule changes during the Georgetown-Oregon game last night. He argued that the college basketball world got lazy, and stopped blowing the whistle for the last decade or so. Consequently, coaches started to teach their players hand-checking, etc. because they knew they could get away with it. I agree somewhat.
The game needed more offense, and a little less physicality. It'll be tough to adjust to the change for everyone (including refs), but it's a good rule change. The game is better for it.
There are definitely fundamentals in the college game. However, I do think AAU coaching has hurt fundamentals, and I'm not sure how much good teaching these players are getting before they step on a college campus.

quote:More physical play and refs swallowing their whistles has made it harder for players to move away from the ball and get open for a good shot, leading players to put more emphasis on "practicing" taking the ball to the hole rather than shooting.

Calling ticky-tack fouls will make the game better over time.

This is exactly the case. That's why we've seen the disappearance of the mid-range jumper.

The key will be if the refs stick with this. We've seen many times in the past in all sports where the refs will start out enforcing mandated rule changes and then slowly morph back to the old ways.
If they do stick with it I think teams adjust out of necessity and the quality of play will steadily improve.
But history tells me the refs will succumb to the pressure and scrutiny of all the fouls being called in a kneejerk fashion and prematurely go back to the way it was as is what usually happens...and we're back to all the clutching, grabbing and holding on d.
